Music Review | Baadshaho | Tanishk Bagchi, Ankit Tiwari

The virality of Mere Rashke Qamar has made me even more curious for the entire album. I understand it is little late for the music review with movie already being released last Friday. So without wasting any more time, let us get started!

Album Release Date: 17th August 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk

Mere Rashke Qamar
Music Composer: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
This song needs no introduction. I usually try not to listen to individual songs prior to the release of entire album but I could not escape this one. This song and its other versions and millions of covers are trending all over YouTube past one month. This qawwali is originally sung by late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This is one of those remake of song that retained its original feel. After mesmerizing the world by reviving Nusrat saheb's Afreen Afreen on Coke Studio, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan does it again with this song. Surprisingly, Nusrat saheb's vocals are also included in this one but are muffled, not sure why!😕

Piya More
Music Composer: Ankit Tiwari
Singers: Mika Singh, Neeti Mohan
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
I heard this song, then I watched the video and I was not impressed both the times. This is a desi song with videsi beats. For the first time, I have seen a female singer steal a song from Mika Singh. We don't get to hear a lot of Ankit Tiwari music these days. Considered myself fortunate, until I heard this song.

Socha Hai
Music Composer: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Jubin Nautiyal, Neeti Mohan
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
14 years after DJ Aqeel remixed Kehdoon Tumhen that was a chartbuster, we have another remix to Kishore Kumar's evergreen kehdu tumhe kya chup rahu from Deewar (1975). I am really digging in this song for a couple of reasons. Firstly, this song will remain a treat to ears no matter what it is remixed into unless Badshah decides otherwise and that is the reason the song begins with "Aayiye sunte hain bina rap wala remix". Second, Jubin Nautiyal voice suits the retro feel of this song. I am surprised I could not recognize Neeti Mohan's voice at all. On the extended note, the YouTube video of this song has a totally different lyrics - Socha Hai because of copyright issues I think. Don't even dare to listen to that version

Hoshiyar Rehna
Music Composer: Traditional Folk
Singers: Neeraj Arya’s Kabir Café
Lyrics: Traditional
Neeraj Arya's Kabir Cafe is a music band who strives to take the dohas of Kabir to a young and dynamic India. Hoshiyar Rehna is one of their most popular songs. Just like how Jasleen Royal solo - Din Shagna Da, was used in the album of Phillauri as is, this album does the same with this song. This song blends in well with the theme of the movie.

Mere Rashke Qamar - 1
Music Composer: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Tulsi Kumar
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
This is a feminine version of the original one. After listening to so many covers of this song on YouTube, this one sounds as beautiful as the original but at the same time as ordinary as any other cover.

Socha Hai (2nd Version)
Music Composer: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Jubin Nautiyal, Neeti Mohan
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
This is the extended version of the original song with one additional verse.

Mere Rashke Qamar (Remix)
Music Composer: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Mere Rashke Qamar is metamorphic. Any version of it in any form sounds melodious.

This entire album rides on only two songs. Rest of them are either mediocre or a version of the original ones. Clearly, the intent of this album was not to blend with the movie but to achieve virality and they have managed to do that. So, here are my favourites from the album, some viral and some not so viral but melodious nonetheless:
Mere Rashke Qamar
Socha Hai
Hoshiyar Rehna
Mere Rashke Qamar - 1

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
