Music Review | A Gentleman- SSR | Sachin-Jigar

Before we start, let us clear a very important thing. The SSR in the title of the movie does not stand for Sushant Singh Rajput but it is part of the movie title and stands for 'Sundar Susheel Risky'. So now that we have got that out of our way, let us get started with the review!

Album Release Date: 17th August 2017

Disco Disco
Singers: Benny Dayal, Shirley Setia
Lyrics: Vayu
I have a huge bias against this song. I have been following Shirley Setia for last four years since her first cover on YouTube and have been a huge fan (crush maybe?) of her. When I heard that she was going to sing in a Bollywood movie, I was really looking forward to it. If you haven't heard her before, this is her original song. She has such a soulful voice. All I could hear in this song was AUTO TUNE. Auto tune that could be anyone but Shirley's voice. The reason I am talking so much about her is because the song in itself is just meh! It is not going to be as popular or is as catchy as Kala Chashma and Tamma Tamma Again.

Baat Ban Jaye
Singers: Siddharth Basrur, Priya Saraiya
Lyrics: Priya Saraiya
Again! Continuing with the rant. Do you want to know how lovely Priya Saraiya sings? Go and check out Sun Saathiya (ABCD 2). What botox does to people's faces, autotune does the same to songs. It doesn't just affect female singers. You should listen to Paani Ka Raasta (Raman Raghav 2.0) or Parwah Nahi (M. S. Dhoni) instead, to know what an amazing singer Siddharth Basrur is. To give you a little more context to the ridiculousness of the song, the song is shot on a beach but the lyrics to the chorus goes - "Band ho kamre mein hum do, aur chaabi kahin kho jaaye to. Toh baat ban jaye" 😑

Chandralekha
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Jonita Gandhi
Lyrics: Vayu
Vishal Dadlani has such a powerful voice that it sometimes gets difficult for a female singer to match him up. The worst thing a music director can do is not only autotune female portions but also have them just for 20 seconds in a three minute song. Anybody could have done that, why even bother bringing in Jonita Gandhi for such a trivial thing. *disappointed even more now* The good parts in the song are the funky lyrics but that doesn't mean the song is good.

Laagi Na Choote
Singers: Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics: Priya Saraiya
Why does it always take an Arijit Singh song to make the entire album barely bearable? I say barely bearable because even established singers like Arijit and Shreya are put through autotune in this song. It is a romantic song and the high scale chorus doesn't quite go with the mood of the song. Nonetheless, this is the best song of the album.

Banduk Meri Laila
Singers: Ash King, Jigar Saraiya, Sidharth Malhotra, Raftaar
Lyrics: Vayu
The hook before the chorus seemed like I had heard it before. A couple of listens and it was clear - Can't Feel My Face (Weeknd). You see in this song I do not mind the auto tune because it blends in well. Raftaar's rap contrasts really well with the mellow and sweet lyrics in the rest of the song.

After completing the album I had to check it once again to confirm that it was indeed a Sachin-Jigar composition. Never have I ever heard such a poor composition from them. I won't be listening to this album again nor will any of the songs would be added on my playlist but if you are a daredevil and want to try this album, here are my top picks:
Laagi Na Choote
Banduk Meri Laila

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
