Music Mention | Judwaa (1996) | Anu Malik

What better way to reminiscence old music than just before reviewing the remake of it. It took me a long time to digest the fact that it has been 21 years since the release of this movie. I was in kindergarten back then. Throughout my school and college life we used to jam on the songs of this movie. I have watched this movie so many times that I have dialogues memorized by now. Salman Khan used to ACT back then and he was my favourite. Moreover, the Anu Malik songs we cringe to today, were chartbusters back then and have a cult following.

For those who are new to Beats and Beyond or need a reminder, this is a special case of my music reviews. It is more of a music mention than a review. I liked something and I want others to be aware of it too. This is the blog version of Music Talk series on my YouTube channel.

Movie Release Date: 7th February 1996

Duniya Mein Aaye
Singers: Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
People had too much time 20 years ago. This is one romantic song that is six minutes long. Some guys are able to finish their romance in half of that time. It takes its own sweet time to go through each line and every verse. This song has two verses, one from Prem's point of view and another from Raja's point of view. My favourite part of this song is when Karisma Kapoor softly pampers Salman's cheeks. So much innocence on Salman's face.

East Aur West India Is The Best
Singers: Anu Malik
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
Here we are trying to blend English and Punjabi rap to make our songs trendy and hip, Anu Malik made a patriotic song with hindi rap and till date, I hear at least one person during Independence and Republic Day saying 'East or West India is the Best'. I think we just need to retrospect on our choice of music these days. Maybe we can take some inspiration from the past. Oh wait, we have an entire movie replicating exactly everything from this movie. 😅

Oonchi Hai Building
Singers: Anu Malik, Poornima
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
This song needs no introduction. Even if someone wants to forget it, Anu Malik will make sure they are reminded by singing lines of this song on television shows. In the era where kissing was shown using flowers, how the hell would someone show a 'booty call' or a 'one night stand'. That is what this song exactly is trying to tell, "I live on 21st floor and I am horny, I am waiting downstairs and I am horny too. The elevator is not working and I can't control my urges." Since people will be shocked if these were the lyrics to the song, so they used euphemistic approach of 'dil razamand hai' and 'mere dulhe raja'. I would suggest you to go ahead and read the lyrics as if it was a 'booty call' and things will start to make sense.

Tan Tana Tan Tan
Singers: Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Poornima
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
Another cult song that beats all the party songs of this year. This song speaks the struggles of arranging a movie date with your partner during the ancient time before smartphones and multiplexes. Also, no points for guessing what "Pichali Sit Ki Do Tikate Hain Gup Chup Pyar Karenge Yaara" EXACTLY means. With all the positivity and happy endings this song gave to the world, there are shitload of eve teasing incidents associated with the chorus of this song 'Tan tana tan tan tan tara chalti hai kya 9 se 12'

Tera Aana Tera Jaana
Singers: Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
In an album full of chartbusters, this on doesn't shine at all. I have never hummed or actively listened to this song all these years until now and I realized why it was not worth my time. Another reason why this song is so vanilla is because it is picturized on Prem who is the plane Jane twin in the movie.

Tu Mere Dil Mein Basja
Singers: Poornima, Kumar Sanu
Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar
On the flip side, this is such a nautanki song. The chorus goes like this "Tu mere dil me basja, mujh ko fasaa le ya fas jaa". Though this song is a lot better than Prem's song, it is still not match to the other songs.

I don't need to recommend any songs in this album. You have already heard it a million times over years. My motive here was just to remind you that Judwaa was a great album and it's songs are still relevant. So relevant that they are now part of the remake too. Music review for Judwaa 2 coming soon!

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
