Omung Kumar returns back with another biopic after Mary Kom. Mary Kom had its share of really good songs but people went in for the story. Maybe it'll be similar with Sarbjit - the songs will be integrated in the story itself and will take the story forward.

What are my expectations before listening to the album?
This album has ten songs. It is going to be a really long review. Hold on your seats tight. A lot of different renowned singers have playbacked for this album. Looking forward to those particular songs. Hoping to find a few surprises in the album too

*3.5 hours later*

My review below will be unbiased by the fact the it is going to be a long album and will be biased towards good music. *fingers crossed*

Salamat
Singers: Arijit Singh, Tulsi Kumar
Lyrics: Rashmi Virag

I like the transition of background beats with each verse. It starts with payal beats in the initial verse, followed by addition of matka beats in other verses. The song doesn't try to do too much with musical arrangements. Keeps it small and simple just like its lyrics about "their small world of romance". Arijit and Tulsi's playback add the correct amount of melody with their mid-scale.

Dard
Singers: Sonu Nigam
Lyrics: Jaani, Rashmi Virag

Well, I am still out of words. The lyrics are really strong and clearly the winner in this song. As the title suggests, it is a sad song paired up with soulful rendition by Sonu Nigam. This song lets the lyrics talk about feelings rather than giving it a negative tone with music. Just to give you context, this is the chorus of the song - Main dardon ko paas bitha kar hi soun, Jo tujhe lagta baarish hai, Wo main hoon jo roun

Tung Lak
Singers: Sukhwinder Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan
Lyrics: Sandeep Singh

This song came in like a storm and left like a hurricane. I felt out of breath just listening to it and dancing it in my head. Sukhwinder doesn't leave any space for Sunidhi to steal the show. The only part I did not like was the female Punjabi rap. It was not at all required. Otherwise, the song definitely got me pumped up.

Rabba
Singers: Shafqat Amanat Ali
Lyrics: Arafat Mehmood

This song has characteristics opposite to the song Dard I described earlier. This song talks with its beats and negative tone rather than lyrics. Shafqat Amanat Ali's strong vocals create a sense of worry that the song is trying to achieve. I am underwhelmed by this one after listening to the first three songs.

Meherbaan
Singers: Sukhwinder Singh, Shail Hada
Lyrics: A. M. Turaz

A qawwali - Wow! Surprising to see a qawwali in an album after a long time. The last there was a qawwali in an album was in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I am guessing the situation in the movie is similar too where the lead character is going to Pakistan in search of their loved one. This song is way better than the one in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The music and lyrics are a mix of Urdu and Punjabi which gives it a fresh perspective. The song starts with bass guitar and ends with Punjabi dhol beats. *thumbs up*

Barsan Laagi
Singers: Shail Hada
Lyrics: A. M. Turaz

So I got a little biased with this one. I was listening to this song and enjoying it, looking for this YouTube thumbnail above and bumped across other versions of this song. One of them is sung by the great Ghulam Ali. Felt that one better than this one. This is neither a remake of that nor is this a remixed version. It's an original song. This is a Indian classical song from Thumri raaga. There are various versions of this song - tune being same and change in lyrics. This song has been toned down a bit on the classical part by soft vocals, percussions and guitar. Wish I had not bumped into the version by Ghulam Ali during my review. Check out Ghulam Ali's version here.

Allah Hu Allah
Singers: Shashaa Tirupati, Altamash, Rabbani Mustafa Khan
Lyrics: Late Haider Nazmi

This is a prayer song and I would not like to dig deep since it is a beautiful song in whatever it is. My only concern is the use of electric guitar. I can keep on playing the flute and tabla part in the song on loop.

Mera Junoon
Singers: Shail Hada
Lyrics: A. M. Turaz

"Do Not Lose Hope" - gist of the song. The song is sung so well that it would have brought great emotion even with just a single instrument. The feel of the song sounds similar to Naina from Omkara.

Nindiya
Singers: Arijit Singh
Lyrics: Sandeep Singh

As the name suggests, it's a lullaby (Omung Kumar's previous movie Mary Kom also had one - Chaoro). The male voice for a lullaby is rare (since you don't see dad's singing lullabies) but if you listen at a lower volume Arijit's voice might put you in deep sleep. Some parts of the song might feel odd since some of it is intentionally offbeat.

Sarbjit (Theme)

Singers: Shail Hada
Lyrics: NA

Nothing to review. Just enjoy the soothing musical arrangements.

That was a marathon of songs I reviewed for this album. A couple of them were repetitive but apart from that this album has a really strong songs that deeply connect with the movie. I realized that since this album has a lot of songs I may not do justice in picking up just three songs. So...

TOP 5 PICKS:
1. Dard
2. Meherbaan
3. Salamat
4. Tung Lak
5. Barsan Laagi

That is all I have for this album. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
