Music Review | Phillauri | Jasleen Royal, Shashwat Sachdev

Anushka Sharma is back with Phillauri as an actor and as a producer. The reason I am talking about her is that we literally have no information about Shashwat Sachdev. This is good in a way. I have zero opinion about his music before this music review. I am going to listen to this album with a blank canvas in my head and let Shashwat paint it with his music. Also, this album has Jasleen Royal (one of my musical crushes). So without further ado, let's get right into it!

Album Release Date: 6th March 2017

Dum Dum
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Romy, Vivek Hariharan
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 5 minutes 13 seconds
Even though Dum Dum might sound like a charged up party song or qawwali, this is actually a soft sufi song. The song begin with iktara instrument and gives a little bit feel of Udja Kaale Kawa (Gadar). This entire song is more than five minutes but it is not woven together seamlessly. The song is split in four parts. First part ends at 1 minute 35 seconds. The first antara is followed until approximately 3 minute mark. Vivek Hariharan takes over from there. In case you don't know who he is, check out his amazing songs from the music album of TVF Tripling. Then there is back and forth fast paced jugalbandi towards the end. The transition for each part is not as smooth as I would have liked it.

Whats Up
Music Composer: Jasleen Royal
Singers: Mika Singh, Jasleen Royal
Lyrics: Aditya Sharma
Runtime: 3 minutes 04 seconds
This is NOT a Mika Song. This is a stereotypical Punjabi song with not much variety to offer. Totally passable song. An underwhelming song by Jasleen Royal.

Sahiba
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Romy, Pawni Pandey
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 5 minutes 30 seconds
One of the anticipated songs of the album. This is a song about the great Mirza-Sahiba love story. Romy gives another soulful song in this album. The lyrics are clean and pure. Pawni Pandey's mellow vocals in this song totally surprised me especially after her Laila Main Laila (Raees). She had very few lines in the song and this one is totally owned by Romy. The music-less portion in the first antara broke the flow of the song (again!). Fortunately, just for a few lines and it's back in the mood. Definitely my favourite of the album. Repeat mode on!

Naughty Billo
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Diljit Dosanjh, Nakash Aziz, Shilpi Paul, Anushka Sharma
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 3 minutes 01 seconds
You need your eyes open to listen to this song because only a good video can increase the appeal for this song. Video here. If clicking the link and watching the video is too much effort for you, just skip this song.

Bajaake Tumba
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Romy, Shehnaz Akhtar
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 3 minutes 18 seconds
This song talks about the town of Phillaur and it's people, Phillauri. This is a situational song which I think is enacted as a street play/nautanki. It'll only be fair to watch this song in the movie and make any judgement.

Din Shagna Da
Music Composer: Jasleen Royal
Singers: Jasleen Royal
Lyrics: Neeraj Rajawat
Runtime: 3 minutes 36 seconds
I was pleasantly surprised to find this song in the album. This is a traditional Punjabi wedding song. However, that's not the reason I was surprised. This is Jasleen Royal's one of the earlier songs she uploaded on YouTube and went viral. This was the song where I discovered her and my crush for her began. Here is the link to it. This is basically that same song she has uploaded the video of.

Dum Dum (Punjabi Version)
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Romy, Vivek Hariharan
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 6 minutes 23 seconds
This song has the setting musical setting, same singers but the lyrics are now a little bit different and in Punjabi. Surprisingly the flow of this version is seamless unlike the original one.

Dum Dum (Reprise) Diljit Dosanjh Version
Music Composer: Shashwat Sachdev
Singers: Diljit Dosanjh
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Runtime: 3 minutes 49 seconds
This version is not as mellow as the original version but I really like Diljit's enunciation of lyrics. Each word of the lyrics hits hard on your ears (in a good way). Being a reprise version, this song takes it's own sweet time to build up. After Ikk Kudi (Udta Punjab), Diljit gives another heart warming Punjabi song to Bollywood.

With minor hiccups in the form of Whats Up and Naughty Billo, this music album has lot of heart and soul put into it. Shashwat Sachdev has given himself a good start to his musical career in Bollywood. He has also ensured that along with himself, the audience looks forward to the singers Romy and Vivek Hariharan. So hear are my favourites from the album:
Dum Dum
Sahiba
Din Shagna Da
Dum Dum (Reprise) Diljit Dosanjh Version

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
