Music Review | Padmaavat (formerly: Padmavati) | Sanjay Leela Bhansali

[1]

While Padman is heroic, Padmaavat is majestic. Padman is driven by story, Padmaavat is driven by story-telling. Padman has music, Padmaavat IS music. The bar is set high by the director-music composer himself - Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Can he outdo himself? Let us find out!

Music Release Date: 21st January 2018

Ghoomar
Singers: Shreya Ghoshal, Swaroop Khan
Lyricist: A. M. Turaz, Swaroop Khan
This song is meta. It talks about the Marvadi dance form of ghoomar while being a ghoomar itself. This song has been out for a while now. The song paces up appropriately. I started to swing my head to the beats and ended up listening to this song for 45 minutes straight. During those 45 minutes, I enjoyed

  • Rajasthani folk,
  • Shreya Ghoshal's intoxicating voice,
  • watching Deepika dance,
  • dancing to the beats myself(reminded me of Navratri)
  • and Swaroop Khan.
It is not often we get to hear Swaroop Khan. This album being his second for the month, I am hoping to hear more of him in 2018.

Ek Dil Ek Jaan
Singers: Shivam Pathak
Lyricist: A. M. Turaz
This song is pure eargasm. In an ideal scenario, I am supposed to be making comparisons to Aayat (Bajirao Mastani) but I got too involved in Shivam Pathak's mesmerizing vocals. The less I speak for this song, the better its purpose will be served.

Khalibali
Singers: Shivam Pathak, Shail Hada
Lyricist: A. M. Turaz
The moment this song begins, you know that this is THE Ranveer-Singh-energy song. Though this song is not as energetic as Malhari (Bajirao Mastani), I really enjoyed the intricate vocal variations by Shivam Pathak. This is an evil's love song. Despite the lyrics being all lovey-dovey, you can sense the cunningness, greed and ego in the singing.

Nainowale Ne
Singers: Neeti Mohan
Lyricist: Siddharth - Garima
This song started off as an Indian classical song, but soon turned into a teen-girl-in-love song with Rajasthani folk tadka. Among all the brilliant hits in this album so far, this one is probably a miss.

Holi (Manganiyars and Langa's folk song)
Singers: Richa SharmaShail Hada
Lyricist: Traditional
This song is a take on Manganiyar's Holi Aaye Re as the title suggests. It has just two short verses but a lot of grey areas between being a small Holi gathering to hiding emotions behind the colors of Holi.

Binte Dil
Singers: Arijit Singh
Lyricist: A. M. Turaz
Maybe Arijit Singh was not the best choice for this Urdu song. After having listened to Atif Aslam slay Urdu pronunciations with Tajdar-e-Haram (Coke Studio), he comes as the obvious choice for this song. I like this song, especially the Arabic music. From what I gathered off the lyrics, this is a narcissistic song, praising (or forced to praise) Ranveer Singh's character.

Following the footprints of Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani, this album was meant to be majestic. However, most of that majestic music was released last month and people are already done with it. The only music to showcase is that of Ranveer Singh with his energetic moves. So here are my favourites from the album:
Ghoomar (duh!)
Ek Dil Ek Jaan (duh again!)
Khalibali

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found it useful. If you did then stay connected with us on our social media pages. Until then, Ciao...!!
