Music Review | Raman Raghav 2.0 | Ram Sampath

Warning! This album is dark, sick, creepy, disgusting and not at all recommended for faint hearted. Such kind of music is not everybody's cup of tea.

Anurag Kashyap movies have always had great music - be it Dev D or Gangs of Wasseypur. Both the movies had close to dozen songs and each one different from the other one. More than the music, what I was looking forward to in this album was Varun Grover's lyrics.

Alright, without further ado, let's get into it and see if you are brave enough to handle it.

Qatl-E-Aam
Lyrics: Varun Grover
Singers: Sona Mohapatra, Yash Divecha
BOOM!! That's the explosion in my head after listening to the song. It's a dubstep track and is trippy as fuck. Even though all the music is electronic, Sona Mohapatra's voice manages to keep it real and desi. The taal before the last verse by Yash Divecha *applause*

Behooda
Lyrics: Varun Grover
Singer: Nayantara Bhatkal, Ram Sampath, Vivienne Pocha, Nalini Krishn
This is THE scary, disturbing and filthy song of the album that defines the entire movie. Kudos to Varun Grover for such repulsive lyrics. Just to give you a glimpse of what to expect here are some verses:
  • Peene ke pani mein, Zehar ki naali chhod de (He is such a disgusting fellow that he can mix poison into drinking water)
  • Teri khaal mein renge kide, Tu sacha behooda (He is so disgusting that worms crawl under his skin)
Combine these with slow music along with female backing vocals and be ready to have sleepless nights. *insert devil's smile here*

Paani Ka Raasta
Lyrics: Varun Grover
Singer: Siddharth Basrur, Ram Sampath
He was an unstoppable force before. Everything is shattered now. He has fallen from skies into deep trenches.
Nothing special on musical arrangements. That's not the purpose of this album anymore. The lyrics all the way. The interpretation of lyrics was so deep that I had to visit Varun Grover's blog post to understand its metaphor. Still couldn't manage to grasp the entire gist of it accurately.

Raghav Theme
This is an EDM track and straightaway gives the faint feel of Animals by Martin Garrix. The sitar successfully manages to keep it dark and desi. TIP: Wait for the drop exactly at the midpoint of the song.

Qatl-E-Aam (Unplugged)
Lyrics: Varun Grover
Singer: Sona Mohapatra
This is how different an unplugged version should sound from its original counterpart.  From a dubstep track straight into the mehfil mode. If the original version was a dance floor song, this is a seduction song.

Unlike other small albums where I suggest you to listen to entire album once, I'd say go ahead, take the risk and play it on loop over a couple of glasses of alcohol.

That is all I have for this album. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
