Music Review | Sultan | Vishal-Shekhar

Salman Khan returns with ummm... Vishal-Shekhar? That's something we've not seen (read: heard) before. With mindless movies, Salman Khan has also left behind mindless music directors and hence mindless songs since Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Alright, without further ado, let's see if this album stamps it's "Sultaniyat" in terms of quality music.

Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Shalmali Kholgade, Ishita, Badshah
From the lyrics standpoint, I like how the guy is trying to woo her with every pick-up line but when nothing works - baby ko bass pasand hai. I guess music is the way to woman's heart. I am starting to find rap in every foot-tapping song monotonous now. The song could have been a lot cleaner without the rap and still retain its charm.

Jag Ghoomeya
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
First thing you notice is that this song gives you 90s feel. Very clean lyrics as could expect from a 90s romantic song. Somehow I felt Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's voice was underutilised in this one.

440 Volt
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Mika Singh
Similar 90s feel in this one too but this is a dance number. Imagine Govinda dancing to this. Fits perfectly! The Haryanvi tone seems to be forced upon. A mediocre song can only be made awesome by Salman Khan's screen presence. Let us wait and see.

Sultan
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Sukhwinder Singh, Shadab Faridi
Every sports movie has its comeback song. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag title track, Ziddi Dil (Mary Kom) and Chale Chalo (Lagaan) to name a few. This is THE song. It's a semi-rock song with lots of percussion. What I really liked is that there are two singers singing in chorus. Coming to the chorus - THERE IS NO CHORUS in this song. The song goes like this - "Upar Allah, niche dharti, Beech mein tera junoon, Aye Sultan!" and then there's just guitar playing in the chorus. *kudos for this unusual experimentation*

Sachi Muchi
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Mohit Chauhan, Harshdeep Kaur
Trumpets to begin with. Sounds like a wedding song. Nope! Soon that is changed by a peppy number. Scottish/Irish strings have been used which gives it a good feel. I think Shaan would've have been a better choice for such a song.

Bulleya
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Papon
Ah ha.. Papon returns. I love his recent songs. They are soulful and and the lyrics carry a lot of weight (not setting expectations though). This is song has a sufiyana feel. Also, this is a song sung by a male but from a female point of view. The female is calling out to her guy who has fought and walked away from her.

Tuk Tuk
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Nooran Sisters, Vishal Dadlani
Life is going slow, it needs some pace. Buck Up!
The song starts with a dark and negative tone. Bring in the Nooran Sisters for some motivation and the mood changes altogether. What surprised me was the dubstep and the rap. One of the few occasion when such an experiment perfectly blends in the song. Definitely my favourite of the album.

Jag Ghoomeya (Female)
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Neha Bhasin
Wow, this went a complete 360 degree from the male version. Very minimalistic instruments being used. The lyrics a mostly same. Neha Bhasin's strong voice for a soft song surprisingly suits here.

Rise of Sultan
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Shekhar Ravjiani
I failed to find Shekhar's voice in this song. Lyrics of this song are just the main verse of the original version. Loved the percussion. Somewhere in the middle the drum rolls sounded like Azeem O Shaan Shehenshah (Jodhaa Akbar)

This album is a welcome change. So many beautiful and meaningful songs. After Bajrangi Bhaijaan, this is definitely my favourite Salman Khan music album.

TOP 3 PICKS:
1. Tuk Tuk
2. Jag Ghoomeya (Female)
3. Bulleya
HONORABLE MENTION: Sultan

That is all I have for this album. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
