Music Review | Banjo | Vishal-Shekhar

If you enjoy watching YouTube videos more than reading a blog post, you can check out my video review for the music album of Banjo here:

If not, read on! The page is all yours.

This movie is called Banjo, which is a story of a banjo player in Mumbai. I am definitely expecting lot of use of banjo in the songs of this album. And with songs like Bappa and Rada, I am also expecting a lot of dhol beats which is trademark Mumbai ishtyle music. So, without further ado, let's get into it and see how this album fares.

Bappa
Singer: Vishal Dadlani
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
We've heard so many ganpati songs in Bollywood in the past and every one of them have a different take. This is a modern take on the ganpati devotion. Three things will catch your attention instantly in this song - 1. Banjo (lots of it), 2. Puneri/Nashik dhol, 3. Vishal Dadlani singing "Ae re bappa tu" as if ganesha is his buddy which is actually how interaction with the God should be (this is my belief, open to your disagreement).

Singer: Hriday Gattani
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
This song is a cloud-9 moment love ballad. Hriday Gattani's vocals have not been suppressed or softened despite the song having a mellow music. Imagine you are sitting with your loved one peacefully enjoying quality time and then suddenly your friends come barging and start teasing you and distracting you. That's exactly what happens towards the end of the song. Towards the end, band with dhols, banjo, manjeera crash into the song and turn it into a celebration.

Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Nakash Aziz, Shalmali Kholgade
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Only a Mumbaikar will understand the true feel of this song. The song starts off with hindi lyrics with an international accent by Shalmali but quickly returns to desi feel as soon as Vishal Dadlani enters the scene. This song too has those three things that caught my attention in the Bappa song. Irony of this song is that it talks about creating fights and ruckus but the music makes you get up and dance Mumbai ishtyle.

Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Nakash Aziz
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Apart from the chorus, I like the lyrics of this song, it's quirky. The first verse is repeated twice which takes two third of the song time which could've been used an additional verse instead of just 'Aaj pee pee pee pee pee pee pee pee paa ke'. The song has english, hindi as well marathi rap.

Singer: Ajay Gogavale
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
This is one of the few soul touching songs I've heard in recent times. I am speechless. The fewer words I write about it the better it is. The song ends a minute before the total run time but make sure to stay for the final minute of the song for that devotional end - Ajay-Atul style.

Singers: Nakash Aziz, Vishal Dadlani
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
This song starts and I think in my head that this is definitely a better ganpati song the Bappa. Soon I realize that apart from Om Ganapataye Namah Deva verse, the song is not at all a ganpati song. It actually a motivation song. You might find Vishal Dadlani starts singing "Say what you want, Say what you want, Say what you need" unnecessary but it definitely gives the required boost in morale of the song.

This album screams, feels and breathes Mumbai in all sense. One thing that is common in all songs is that each one of them ends with fast paced dhol beats. I thoroughly enjoyed listening and reviewing this album. So, here are my favourites from the album:
Rehmo Karam
Bappa
Udan Choo

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
