Music Review | Udta Punjab | Amit Trivedi

Finally..!! I've been waiting for this album for a long time. Why you may ask? Because Amit Trivedi. He is one of my favorite music composers. What I really like is that it takes a couple of repeated listening to truly understand the feel of the song and its musical intricacies.

My review below will be unbiased by the fact that I am a Amit Trivedi fan and will be biased towards good music. *fingers crossed* Mehh! I know good music follows below this.

*2 hours and 3 listenings later*

Chitta Ve
Singer: Babu Haabi, Shahid Mallya, Bhanu Pratap
Lyrics: Shellee
This is an addiction. The song I meant - well the stuff this song talks about is also an addiction. I think this is the first time I've heard narration in a song as lyrics. The introductory rap portions in the song provides a glimpse of how an addict behaves while the rest of the song highlights the effects of chitta ve and the situation of addicted people in Punjab. If you did not figure this out while listening to this song you might find the transition between rap and lyrics a bit odd. But then how dare you doubt Amit Trivedi's music? Go and give it another listen.

Da Da Dasse
Singers: Kanika Kapoor, Babu Haabi
Lyrics: Shellee
This is one hell of a trippy song. This is truly Amit Trivedi kind of music. Got vibes of Dev D in this song - especially Pardesi . So here's another song about chitta ve. Kanika Kapoor portions in the song are actually 'your mind' talking to you and giving warning about the after effects of excess consumption of chitta ve.. Babu Haabi portions of the song are 'your heart' rebelling and asking for more of it.

Ikk Kudi

Singer: Shahid Mallya
Lyrics: Late Shiv Kumar Batalvi
A girl named Love ran away. She was as beautiful as a fairy. Her smile made flowers blush and her cry was melody. I pray for her well-being. I understand she has a long life ahead but I can't stop my tears.
Thank me later. I just gave you the jist of the song, now go and please listen to it. Why did I give away the meaning of the song if I wanted you to listen to it? Because the song is in Punjabi and some of the interpretations were difficult for me as well. The best part about the song is minimum musical arrangements. We expect Amit Trivedi music to have lot of amazing arrangements but simplicity takes this song through.

Ud-Daa Punjab
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Amit Trivedi
Lyrics: Varun Grover
This are getting out of control now and nobody cares! I like when Amit Trivedi sings in his albums. His voice provides a raw feel to the song. In terms of music, that drop before the chorus is not as deep as you'd like it but hits the spot. So I've come to a realization that every rap in this album is from the addict's point of view and displays their behaviour. Vishal Dadlani's rap in this song does the same. The addict's behaviour is so out of hand that the words in the rap make no sense by the end of the song.

Hass Nach Le
Singer: Shahid Mallya
Lyrics: Shellee
I always love it when songs use Indian instruments and this one has it. I couldn't interpret most of the lyrics and hence the mood of the song but from a musical point of view it seems nothing extraordinary. Again I know may be completely wrong. Let me know if you know what this song is trying to convey.

Vadiya
Singers: Amit Trivedi
Lyrics: Shellee
I thought it was vaadiya (valley) but it turns out it is vadiya (which in Punjabi means 'good'). The intro beeps are F-ing annoying and hits the nerve. The moment I imagine it to be playing in clubs on the dance floor it makes sense. Expect this song to be popular in the club scene. It is an EDM number with the deep drops you missed in the previous song.

Ikk Kudi (Reprised Version)
Singers: Diljit Dosanjh
Lyrics: Late Shri Shiv Kumar Batalvi
For those who don't know Diljit Dosanjh, he is a pretty big name in the Punjabi film industry. He is a Punjabi singer, actor and television presenter. The song I am guessing is recorded purely for promotional purposes - to showcase his singing skills and dedicate a song for Ali Bhatt fans. Other than that, it is exactly the same lyrics apart from minor changes in musical arrangements.

Just snorted seven songs of Amit Trivedi music and damn! I am high on it right now. Two things define this album:
  • Punjabi lyrics - none of the songs are in hindi
  • chitta ve - most of the songs revolve around use and abuse of cocaine

Difficult task but here are my favourite songs from the album.

TOP 3 PICKS:
  1. Da Da Dasse
  2. Ikk Kudi (both)
  3. Ud-Daa Punjab
CONSOLATION: Chitta Ve

That is all I have for this album. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!

  1. For the lyrics of "Hass Nach Le" : http://www.lyricsmint.com/2016/05/hass-nach-le-udta-punjab.html

It is basically an appeal to the addicts to laugh and dance away their sorrows, accept that the almighty god controls our fate and we're mere puppets in his hands, Look inside yourself and realise that god exists in every human being. It's basically asking them to give life one more chance.

    1. Thanks Pranav for this. Hearing it again along with the lyrics definitely makes a lot of sense.
