Music Review Catch Up | April-May 2016 | Nil Battey Sannata, One Night Stand, Traffic, 1920 London and Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

Over the last few months I've reviewed a lot of Bollywood music albums. However, I've missed a lot more albums that had really good music. So in my this series of posts I will catch up on those albums. Music reviews are time sensitive and hence my aim has always been to write music reviews as close to the music album release as possible. The reason being, once the movie approaches its release date, people tend to forget about music and care more about the movie. A lot of my readers asked me to review some albums which were released way back in April and hence this is my music review catch up for all the music albums released in April and May. Over a period of time, I wish to reduced the frequency of music review catch up and write a full-fledged reviews for every album released. So without further ado, let's get started!

Pick of the individual albums are highlighted in RED

Murabba is a simplistic song about a girl who wants to dream big. This song completely defines the movie. It is relevant from the mother's as well as daughter's point of view.
Maths Mein Dabba Gul is an exam time song. Dedicated to all my friends who struggled in maths during school. The song is paced accurately to depict the chaos and confusion during the exam time.
Maula: I really liked Nandini Srikar's rustic voice and the suppressed instruments in the song. The focus in this song is more on the lyrics and less on musical arrangements
Maa (Part 1 & 2): Any song named Maa needs no explanation. First one is sung by Agnee band vocalist Mohan Kannan and has a raw feel to it whereas the second one sung by Hariharan has a mellow tone.

One Night Stand
Music Director: Tony Kakkar, Jeet Gannguli, Meet Bros, Vivek Kar

Do Peg Maar is a forgettable sleazy song.
Ijazat: We all know that Arijit Singh can make any song into a romantic one. Well, this one is another super romantic number. Just close your eyes and listen to it. Maybe you won't even need Sunny Leone for recreational purposes.
Ishq Da Sutta is a shameless rip-off of Worth It by Fifth Harmony
Ki Kara tries hard to be a Punjabi song but fails in certain aspects. Lyrics are worth taking note of though.
Le Chala: Go with the flow - is the theme of this song. Really like the build up to the chorus. I've started to like Jubin Nautiyal voice and the type of songs he sings.
Tum Mere: The song had a decent start until it reached the chorus suddenly on a high note and burnt my ears

Traffic
Music Director: Mithoon

Keh Bhi De: This song has a Pyar Ko Ho Jaane Do (Dushman) vibe. I would have liked if this was a female only song. Mithoon does a good job in the male portions of the song but it breaks the flow and scale set by Palak Muchhal
Neki Ki Raah: Wow. Such thoughtful lyrics this song has towards God. "Neki ki raahon pe tu chal, Rabba rahega tere sang, Woh toh hai tere dil mein haan, Tu kyu bahar ussey dhoondta?" plus playbacked by Arijit Singh. Easily one of my favourite songs of this post.
Kuch Der: When this song started I confused it with Jaage Hain (Guru). Towards the second verse I felt the lack of power in the voice of Palak Muchhal which would have hold the song better given the minimal instruments used.
Vitthala Naam: It's a bhajan devoted to lord Vitthala. Lord Vitthala bhajan's are usually in marathi and I would've have liked the same with this one too.
Tu Alvida: Another great song but not so good execution. This song would've been impactful if Mithoon had taken it solo. The way he took it off in the last verse gave a glimpse of what this song could've achieved.

1920 London
Music Director: Sharib-Toshi, Kaushik-Akash (J.A.M.)

Aaj Ro Len De: Loved the singing by Sharib Shabri and loved the rabab (musical instrument). This is the second song of this post that tried to be Punjabi and fails to certain aspect
Rootha Kyun: Mohit Chauhan's first song of 2016 and it is... Mehh!!
Tujhko Mein: Shaan's first song of 2016 and this doesn't fail. Shaan's voice gives a positive vibe to this song in a horror movie. I don't care how the video is, just close your eyes and you'll automatically see Shaan singing live in front of you.
Afreen: When you have a powerhouse like K.K. you don't let your female singer just whisper the lyrics. Talking about lyrics, 40% of the lyrics just says "afreen"

Do Lafzon Ki Kahani
Music Director: Babli Haque

Jeena Marna (Male): This song is a cocktail of Chand Sifarish (Fanaa) music and Aye Khuda (Murder 2) vocals.
Jeena Marna (Female): Same music, same lyrics, just sung by Palak Muchhal. I wonder why they removed reverb (echo effect) in this song whereas they had it in the male version
Kuch Toh Hai: Template melody song. Tried and tested formula of a chartbuster. Nothing new. Armaan Malik provides an album saviour with this one.
Sehra: You don't want to change a perfect formula for a chartbuster. Such is the formula that you take inspiration from your own song Boond Boond (Roy) *sigh*
Ankhiyaan: I am surprised an album full of mediocre songs has an odd beautiful and lyrical song which takes your breath away.

In the beginning I said these are all the albums I missed in last two months. However, when heard some of the albums I decided that they deserved their own post, given the kind of songs they had. So my reviews to the music of Dhanak and Waiting will be in separate individual posts.

TOP 3 PICKS of the post:
1. Maula
2. Ijazat
3. Neki Ki Raah

Special Mention: Maths Mein Dabba Gul

That is all I have for this post. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of these albums or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
