Music Review Catch Up | Q4 2017 - Chef, Secret Superstar, Jia aur Jia, Ittefaq, Ribbon, Qarib Qarib Singlle, Firangi

Just as the year is about to end and you all are in a rush to leave behind the past and get over with it, I am in the same boat as you. I have missed reviewing these albums and now I am giving you quick reviews of them to sign off for the year.

A lot of you readers might not be aware about some of these movies, hence I have provided IMDb links to plot summary. So without further ado, let's get right into it!

(Songs highlighted in RED are my picks from the each album. You can just listen to these and get the feel of entire album in case you are short on time or feel like you have better things to do in life than listen to music)

Chef
Music Release Date: 26th September 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
Music: Raghu Dixit
Plot Summary: IMDb
Shugal Laga Le is an uplifting slice of life song with Goan beats. I had heard this song a lot of times on radio and always liked it but never got a chance to look it up. It is nice to finally associate it with a music composer and movie.
Darmiyaan is a song you must listen to in a live performance rather in your headphones. The guitar strums and raw vocals of Raghu Dixit leave you wanting for more.
Tan Tan makes you get up and groove to it. The beats and lyrics do most of the work rather than the singer.
Shahid Mallya showcases his classical side in Khoya Khoya. He doesn't go overboard with it and maintains digestible levels for the mainstream audience.
Banjara, sung by Vishal Dadlani, is the best song of the album. That powerful voice of his can make any song motivational.

Secret Superstar
Music Release Date: 17th October 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
YouTube
Music: Amit Trivedi
Plot Summary: IMDb
This is one of those albums I desperately wanted to review but did not get an opportunity due to circumstances.
Main Kaun Hoon is an honest song, written and sung, from the heart. I was able to feel the conflict and anger of the character.
Meri Pyaari Ammi adds to the list of never-ending songs dedicated to moms. Despite the innocence, this song doesn't come out as exceptional song. Loved Meghna Mishra's singing in this song and throughout the album (she has sung all the songs in the album, almost).
Sapne Re talks about wish to fulfill all the dreams. The matka and dholak in the song conflicted with the vibe of the song.
The best song in the album is surprisingly not sung by the lead singer, Meghna Mishra. I'll Miss You is a song about teenage love and friendship. The gujarati line in the chorus was icing on the cake.
Nachdi Phira is about breaking free and dancing your way.
Sexy Baliye is what seems like an attempt to recreate I Hate You Like I Love You (Delhi Belly) with a mix of mix of Love Sex Aur Dhoka title track but fails miserably.
Sunidhi Chauhan does not have an innocent voice to justify talking about the lifestyle of a teenager in the song Gudgudi.
This album covered a lot of teenage emotions. O Re Manwa tackles another one, talking about acting against own wishes in favour of parents' orders.

Jia Aur Jia
Music Release Date: 17th October 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
YouTube
Music: Sachin Gupta, Nishchal Zaveri
Plot Summary: IMDb
Na Skhure is so fake that is has an aalap with an accent. Save yourself and skip it.
Naach Basanti had that potential to become a popular dance number but it came like breeze and went quickly like a hurricane. The tempo made it difficult for any layman to dance to it.
You know you are not very creative when you title a song - Na Jaa by Nandini and have to overpower it with music.
Jia Aur Jia Theme is a breeze. You wouldn't even realize when it goes by.
Na Jaa by Asees Kaur is actually the song I wanted to listen in this album. This song is classical voice blending with contemporary music.

Ittefaq
Music Release Date: 23rd October 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
YouTube
Music: Tanishk Bagchi, Bappi Lahiri
Plot Summary: IMDb
Ittefaq Se Raat Baaki surprisingly fits in perfectly with the context of the movie. This song is a remix of Raat Baaki Baat Baaki (Namak Halal). Jubin has aced the art of perfectly keeping the essence of the original song in remixes. I will listen to this song on loop.

Ribbon
Music Release Date: 31st October 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
Music: Mikey McCleary
Plot Summary: IMDb
Charkha Ghoom Raha Hai is a slice of life song that talks about how life doesn't stop for anybody and just keep moving one; we need to catch on. Aniket Mangrulkar's voice has an indie vibe to it and I would not be surprised if he lends his voice for web series or short films in future.
If you have heard Mikey McCleary's compositions before (Waiting), you will thoroughly enjoy Har Mod Par Umeed Hai. Add to that Jasleen Royal's innocent voice and it makes you cuddle up to this laidback song.

Qarib Qarib Singlle
Music Release Date: 31st October 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
YouTube
Music: Vishal Mishra, Rochak Kohli
Plot Summary: IMDb
Khatam Kahani is Nooran sisters' failed attempt to blend into mainstream Bollywood songs. The song is rushed and does not give enough time for them to build-up.
Tu Chale Toh starts off as a lovely ballad but ends in a chaos. Producers wanted to save an extra song in the album so merged it's remix in the same song.
I regret not listening to Jaane De earlier. This gem is the star of the album and thus the movie. This song doesn't give one of those romantic Atif but a classical Atif.
The beats of Tanha Begum are perfectly suitable for mild headbangs. It is a blend of rock and Indian classical

Firangi
Music Release Date: 21st November 2017
Listen to the album on:
Saavn
Gaana
Wynk
YouTube
Music: Jatinder Shah
Plot Summary: IMDb
Oye Firangi starts off well but falters in the chorus. Also, I am not sure why the song ends with ballroom music.
Sajna Sohne Jiya is a marriage song with powerful singing by Jyoti Nooran and a contrasting peppy music.
Sahiba Russ Gayiya is standard melodious Rahat Fateh Ali Khan song. No complaints
Tu Jit Jawna is a peppy number with positive vibe but is all over the place.
Gulbadan is a sleazy mujra with unwanted autotune used for Mamta Sharma's beautiful voice
Sahiba (Male) - Unplugged tries to serve best of both the worlds. But it is difficult to enjoy both the songs especially when they are sung by such amazing singers. You end up liking either of the one.

A couple of albums were shiners, rest of them were just meh! I don't regret missing out on them. So, here is a list of all my favourite songs from the above mentioned movies:
Shugal Laga Le
Banjara
Main Kaun Hoon
I'll Miss You
Na Jaa
Ittefaq Se Raat Baaki
Har Mod Par Umeed Hai
Jaane De
Tanha Begum
Sahiba Russ Gayiya

That is all I have for these albums now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
