Music Review | Half Girlfriend | Tanishk Bagchi, Mithoon, Farhan Saeed, Rahul Mishra, Ami Mishra, Rishi Rich

After playing Chetan Bhagat in 2 States, Arjun Kapoor returns reprising one of his other characters from one of his novels. The purpose of the rest of the team (Shraddha Kapoor, the director and the music team) of this movie is to recreate the magic of Aashiqui 2. I would like to be proven wrong by the end of this review but only time will tell. So, without further ado, let's get right into it!

Album Release Date: 28th April 2017

Baarish
Music: Tanishk Bagchi
Singers: Ash King, Shashaa Tirupati
Lyrics: Arafat Mehmood, Tanishk Bagchi
I was curious to know about all the hype surrounding this song on social media. Turns out internet opinions should not be taken on their face value. The singing is monotonic as is with lot of other songs by Ash King. Moreover, the singing is faintly similar to Kaabil Hoon (Kaabil). I really liked how the lyrics of the chorus have chaining effect. Other than that it is an ordinary song. It seems that the internet is not obsessed by the song but the guy featuring at 0:57 in the video of the song.

Thodi Der
Music: Farhan Saeed
Singers: Farhan Saeed, Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics: Kumaar
This song is a recreation of Pakistani artist Farhan Saeed’s single Tu Thodi Dair. Both of these versions are beautiful in their own right despite being set in completely different situations altogether. The lyrics are innocent and full of love. I wish the music was not as overpowering as it is during the male parts. P.S.: Do not try to watch the video of this song. It will ruin the entire song for you

Tu Hi Hai
Music: Rahul Mishra
Singers: Rahul Mishra
Lyrics: Laado Suwalka
The background instrument in the chorus replicates the same beats as the antara of Tujhe Bhula Diya (Anjaana Anjaani). High pitched sad songs are really popular these days. Some of them are really good too. This one doesn't quite reach there. It is trying to but falls short. The background vocals in the chorus blend in really well with the lead singer's voice.

Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga
Music: Mithoon
Singers: Arijit Singh, Shashaa Tirupati
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Arijit Singh + Mithoon + Mohit Suri trio return to recreate the magic of Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2). This is a well thought out song to capitalize on all the points that worked in favour of Tum Hi Ho.
  • The Arijit-Mithoon combination
  • A slow and mellow music
  • A gentle drop of beat before the chorus
  • Repeating the song title multiple times in the chorus
  • Emotional lyrics
  • Eureka moment when both the guy and the girl realize they have fallen in love
  • Few lines of high pitch singing "Tere liye hain jiya main, Khud ko jo yun de diya hai" in Tum Hi Ho and "Meri jaan mein har khamoshi le,Tere pyaar ke naghme gaaunga" in this song
Despite realizing and pointing out these observations I still enjoyed the song. The female portions add to the feel of the song. Definitely on my repeat list.

Pal Bhar (Chaahunga Reprise)
Music: Mithoon
Singers: Mithoon, Arijit Singh
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Remember how Meri Aashiqui Ab Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2) was an extension to the original song because the composers didn't want the original song to run for ten minutes? This song is a similar extension to the previous song. The only difference is that this one has overly melodramatic music.

Lost Without You
Music: Ami Mishra
Singers: Ami Mishra, Anushka Shahaney
Lyrics: Kunaal Vermaa, Anushka Shahaney
The song started really well, transitioning from English lyrics to Hindi lyrics. Ami Mishra has a different voice which gives it fresh feel to the song. I didn't quite like the interlude between verses. The lyrics are not a strong point of this song. The song would attract more traction had it been given a Hindi title instead. Listen to it for Ami Mishra's singing.

Stay A Little Longer
Music: Farhan Saeed
Singers: Anushka Shahaney
Lyrics: Anushka Shahaney
This is the most unexpected song of the album. I felt as if I had heard this song before until Anushka singing the chorus "Stay a Little Longer" which literally translates to "Thodi Der Aur Ruk Ja". This is the English version of Thodi Der from this album. Anushka Shahaney's pronunciation of words did not feel smooth (probably that is how she was asked to sing). I would love to hear more of her voice in future. The lyrics are almost literal English translation.

Mere Dil Mein
Music: Rishi Rich
Singers: Veronica Mehta, Yash Narvekar
Lyrics: R. Rekhi, Veronica Mehta, Yash Anand, Yash Narvekar
So, this is the title song of movie and it is really catchy. When the song is catchy, lyrics don't matter. However, two lines have been stuck in my head "Me me me me mere dil mein" and "Ijazat hai?". The rapping is so much better than what we have been hearing of late. The last popular song we heard from Rishi Rich was Mere Dil Vich Hum Tum (Hum Tum).

Half Girlfriend Love Theme
Music: Mithoon
Singers: NA
Lyrics: NA
This song is an piano and flute focused instrumental version of Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga. It is interesting how Mere Dil Mein is the title track of the album and the producers are trying to promote Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga as the song of the album. Just like Aashiqui 2.

Mere Dil Mein (Dialogue Version)
Music: Rishi Rich
Singers: Veronica Mehta, Yash Narvekar
Lyrics: R. Rekhi, Veronica Mehta, Yash Anand, Yash Narvekar
This is the same song as the original version with addition of dialogues from the movie. Nothing more to say on it.

Out of the ten songs in the album, only five of them are original compositions. The rest are either versions of them or recreation of some other song. This album is trying to be the record blockbuster album of Aashiqui 2 but manages to be only half of it. Nonetheless, here are my favourites from the album:
Thodi Der
Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga
Mere Dil Mein

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
