Music Review | Mirzya - Dare To Love | Shankar Ehsaan Loy

The trailer looked picturesque. Whenever there are movies with such artistic and colorful cinematography, the music is bound to be unorthodox and refreshing. This album has a total of 15 tracks (9 songs and 6 poems). I will be splitting this review correspondingly. This album also features a lot of non popular singers and I will try to give out references to their previous work wherever possible. So, without further ado, let's explore this album together.

Mirzya
Singers: Daler Mehndi, Sain Zahoor, Akhtar Chanal Zahri, Nooran Sisters
Lyrics: Gulzar
This is the title song of the album and I couldn't have heard a better song to start this review. First and the foremost thing - the music of this song speaks volumes of the rich culture it is portraying. One can just close their eyes and will be automatically teleported to that era (even though I don't know how that era looked or sounded) but at the same time it gives a haunting fear of the sequence of events that happened between Mirza and Sahiban. Secondly, the lyrics by Gulzarji talks about the immortal love story between Mirza and Sahiban and draws comparisons with the constant existence of nature. I am writing this statement just once but it will be applicable to all the songs of this album - Only Gulzarji could've pulled this off. Now coming to the singing department that actually stamps this song as masterpiece. Daler Mehndi has a thunderous voice and does manage to storm away the song single handedly. You might not know Sain Zahoor and Akhtar Chanal Zahri but after this song you might want to explore their songs on Coke Studio. To help you distinguish their voices, Sain Zahoor is the one who starts off the song. Nooran Sisters (in case you don't remember, they sang Tuk Tuk (Sultan)) had a really small part in this song but they have a lot of other songs in this album so looking forward to that.

Singer: Siddharth Mahadevan, Sain Zahoor
Lyrics: Gulzar
Yes, Sain Zahoor starts this song as well. Siddharth Mahadevan takes over from there. This maybe his song but it is the 'The Salvation Singers' choir that caught my attention the most. Read more about them here and watch them performing on Coke Studio here. There is something about choir singing that makes even a lonely song jolly. I say 'lonely' song because this song is about how there are only three people to witness and understand the love of Mirza Sahiban - God and both of them.

Singer: Mame Khan, Shuchismita Das, Akhtar Chanal Zahri
Lyrics: Gulzar
With the kind of start this song has, you will definitely not expect it to turn out to be *spoiler alert* an electronic beat song. You have the folk singers and the rural lyrics but the music feels peppy and urban. As much as you love the bass in the beats, this song gives you deep bass in the vocals too. Mame Khan has a terrific voice (watch his Coke Studio performance with Amit Trivedi here) and I am a bit disappointed that autotune was used for his vocals. However, it does sound good and goes well with the mood of the song. This is the second song where a female singer has not been used to her full potential (Suchismita Das' performance with A. R. Rahman on Coke Studio). I am waiting for one powerful female song in this album. Coming back to the song, it talks about how there was a social inequality between Mirza and Sahiban but he has the fire inside him to fly away with the winds like the kite unlike others who just wither away burning their feelings inside.

Singer: Mame Khan, Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Gulzar
The song does not just talk about hitchki (hiccups) but there are actual hiccups as part of singing which makes it believable. The song has some harsh lyrics despite the music being mellow. Talking of music, between every phrase there is a different musical arrangement. Two particular musical arrangements I liked - guitar-kartaal fusion and the end of the song (wait for it). This is my favourite song of the album so far!

Singer: Nooran Sisters, Sain Zahoor, Akhtar Chanal Zahri, Daler Mehndi
Lyrics: Gulzar
The songs prior to this one have raised the bar so high that it is getting difficult to match up with expectations for this song. This is the song Nooran sisters get an opportunity to showcase their prowess. Similar to Chakora, the kind of start this song has, one cannot expect it'll be bass and beat heavy song during the chorus. Akhtar Chanal Zahri manages to create a fear in me with his voice.

Singer: Nooran Sisters, Kannan Mohan
Lyrics: Gulzar
The initial aalap by one of the Nooran sisters had too many breaks to breathe. I am hoping that was intentional and would be apparent after watching the video. Mere listening to that aalap does gives an amateurish feel. Following that Kannan Mohan starts singing the first verse and that deep bass vocals is oddly satisfying. While he is singing, the background music is nothing but a sequence of one clap and two times finger snapping (trying doing it). The only instrument used is guitar and that too after almost half the song is over. When you have a duet with a pair of female singers and a single male singer, you have to figure out their order of singing. Both the sisters cannot always sing together while the male sings alone. What do you do then? Listen to the song to find out (not everything can be explained through words. I try my best though.)

Singer: Shankar Mahadevan,Mame Khan
Lyrics: Gulzar
Nowhere in the frickin world would you have expected this album to have jazz music along with classical Indian lyrics. The music and singing together are creating a confusion in my mind - should I feel all traditional and desi or should I suit up and be sophisticated? Similar to some of the previous songs in this album, Mame Khan starts off with giving all the perfect desi vibes. Enter Shankar Mahadevan, the mood and ambience is jazzed up. I think one can categorize this song as melancholy. *repeat mode on*

Singer: Kaushiki Chakraborty
Lyrics: Gulzar
This song has just one verse repeated twice. Do listen to this song for the sargam between those two verses. This is a complete Indian classical song which might not be everyday's type. Here is another song by Kaushiki Chakraborty performing on Coke Studio with Shantanu Moitra.

With so many and such diverse set of songs, this was the most difficult album I've reviewed till date. I thoroughly enjoyed this music album. Bollywood delivers two or three of such magnificent albums every year. Hats off to Shankar Ehsaan Loy for not just creating a beautiful album but also bringing in some of the very talented lesser known names to Bollywood and not to forget the magical words of Gulzar. I'll be listening to the entire album on loop for days to come but here are my special favourites from the album:
Mirzya
Teen Gawah Hai Ishq Ke
Aave Re Hitchki
Doli Re Doli

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
