Music Review | M. S. Dhoni - The Untold Story | Amaal Mallik

Cricket is religion in India, so is Bollywood. The two have come together in the past. They come together again with a movie based on India's most loved and successful cricket captain - Mahendra Singh Dhoni. So, without further ado, let's get into it and see if this album is able to build the same love among masses.

Besabriyaan
Singer: Armaan Malik
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
The song talks about impatience to move away from current mundane and low-key life. One needs enough motivation from inside to do that and Manoj Muntashir nails it with lyrics in bringing out this motivation. Armaan Malik showcases his singing versatility yet. Amaal Mallik has kept the most important song of the movie surprisingly underwhelming. The song peaks on high notes just before the chorus and the chorus itself is soft spoken.

Singer: Palak Muchhal
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
The song is about Dhoni's then girlfriend professing (read: bragging) her unconditional love towards him. The music is serene and one can easily get lost in it. If you notice, there is a subtle beat drop after the chorus. This is definitely going into my favourites list of this album.

Singer: Armaan Malik
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Another romantic song? Being a movie based on the life of sportsman, I am surprised. This song brings back the deep vocals of Armaan Malik which has been a template in lot of his recent songs. The better part about this song is that it has a run time of less than three minutes.

Singer: Arijit Singh
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Romantic song # 3. Note this! I am trying hard to get my head around so many romantic songs in this album. The song is not your staple Arijit Singh number. It is more of freestyle singing. The lyrics are also phrased in an unorthodox manner. I like the song but not sure if this was actually required in the album.

Singer: Siddharth Basrur
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Oh Yesssss! Finally a high-energy song in the album. This song wastes no time in prelude and Siddharth Basrur starts singing from the first second itself. My respect for Amaal Mallik as composer has suddenly skyrocketed with this percussion and beat heavy rock song. As if the music was not enough to charge you up, lyrics such as "Saanson mein jo bhatti hai, Woh raat aur din dehekti hai, Paani waani toh dhoka hai, Ye aag aag se bujhti hai" takes this song to a whole new energy levels. This song will sweat you out. It is the perfect workout song.
Fun Fact: There are three electric guitarists in this song. One of them is Armaan Malik.

Singer: Armaan Malik
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Redux means "brought back; revived". This could either mean, and the lyrics suggest the same too, that Dhoni is getting back with his lover back again OR it could mean the original song was not good enough so let's bring it back and create a new version. I am more inclined towards the second possibility. Either ways this song has my attention. Even though the original doesn't, this song is going in my favourites list.

Singer: Ananya Nanda, Adithyan Prithviraj
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
This song made me smile and embarrassed at the same time. This is a sarcastic take on Indian education in the form of a jugalbandi between two kids.
Girl: Arrey badmashiyon se zara baaz aao, Thoda kitaabon se bhi dil lagao
Boy: Vidhya kasam hum padhenge daba ke, Magar tum bhi dekho kitaabon se aage
Two kids singing this song makes it cute but the conversation they have makes me embarrassed because that's what we've all been taught to do at school when we were kids.
Fun Fact: Ananya Nanda (14yo) is the winner of Indian Idol Junior 2015.

Har Gully Mein Dhoni Hai (YouTube link for this song is not available)
Singer: Rochak Kohli
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
I wish I had listened to this song before Parwah Nahi. Rochak Kohli starts off with deep notes and electric guitar playing in the background. This instantly builds up the anticipation that something epic is coming up. With lyrics like "Aa rahe hain hum jo, Khalbali toh honi hai" leading up to the chorus, you definitely get anxious. And then chorus starts and you realize that the song title itself is the chorus. *quite disappointed*. As the song progresses I realized that this song is not about motivation or comeback. It is about the euphoria surrounding the success of Dhoni. Apart from that chorus portion, I really like the lyrics, singing as well as the music of this song.

This album started off really well with songs like Besabriyaan and Kaun Tujhe, lost track with too many other romantic numbers but managed to end it on a high note. I am definitely impressed by Amaal Mallik's first full-fledged Bollywood album. I would like to see him doing more solo compositions for movies in future. So, here are my favourites of the album:
Besabriyaan
Kaun Tujhe
Parwah Nahi
Jab Tak (Redux)
Padhoge Likhoge

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
