Music Review | Rock On 2 | Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Back to back Shankar Ehsaan Loy reviews on this blog. Previous one being Mirzya. Despite this album being a sequel to one of the most loved albums, I am going to review it as any other album and not as a franchise. Looking forward to Shraddha Kapoor singing.

Jaago
Singer: Farhan Akhtar, Siddharth Mahadevan
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Even though the song is about waking up and knowing your rights, that is not the purpose of this song in the album. This song doesn't want to 'wake you up'. Towards the end of the song if you started head banging (even if it means just in your mind) then the song was successful in making you feel of the kind of music you'd be encountering in this album. Farhan Akhtar is not a soft singer. He has a coarse and realistic voice and that's what I expected and got in this song. Same goes with the lyrics. They are neither melodic nor rhyming. The lyrics have a conversational verbiage.

Singer: Shraddha Kapoor, Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
The song started and I was unaffected by Shraddha Kapoor's singing because I've heard her before and I know she sings good. Then she sang the chorus and BOOOOM!!!!!! Things just exploded. I don't know how much effort went into either auto tuning during editing or she actually practiced her vocals (which I am guessing is the case), but the result is amazing. I am literally fangirling her over her cute face and powerful voice after this song. The male portions are sung by Shankar, which is definitely manipulated because it doesn't sound like him. And again, this song talks about waking up and breaking away from various barriers of life.

Singer: Farhan Akhtar
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
This sounds like a schoolgirl pop song. I will not argue about the lyrics since they have a conversational verbiage, again. What bothers me more is the music. Firstly, the 'oooo ooo ooo' in the chorus sounds immature. Second, this is a clear attempt to recreate Pichhle Saat Dino. Third, music heavily overpowers vocals.

Singer: Farhan Akhtar
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
You know how it sounds when normal people sing a soothing song in real life? This is the answer. The guitar loop in the background gives this song an amazing relaxing feel. However, the vocals do not give you a moment to actually feel that relaxed. Why so you may ask? Because they are minimally processed/edited and gives it a realistic feel. This type of songs are not everybody's preference. Being an amatuer singer myself, I liked it.

Singer: Shraddha Kapoor
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
One of the weakest song of the album. The song is split in two parts. The first half of the verse is in low notes and the second half including the chorus is in high notes. The lyrics of the low note verses are actually meaningful. The music and lyrics of high note verses are template peppy song loop.

Singer: Shraddha Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Beautiful lyrics! One person is waiting for the perfect world to come. The other person makes him/her realize that take away the barriers and bondages and the world you live in will be perfect. The musical build up is almost perfect from the female to male portions. This is one of those songs when sung live, the audience will pull out their flashlights and sway with their hands.

Singer: Usha Uthup, Kit Shangpliang & Pynsuklin Syiemiong (Summer Salt band)
I have no idea what one half of the song means but it charged me up for the hindi portions by Usha Uthup. Upon further research I found out the the unknown language portions are actually in Khasi language that is spoken in the Khasi hills of Meghalaya. Check out the performance of Summer Salt band of the same song here. Shankar Ehsaan Loy picked up their song and added hindi portions to it. It is amazing how a folk song from a non-popular region has fusioned with a hindi rock song. This is unexpectedly brilliant motivational song.

Singer: Shankar Mahadevan, Digvijay Singh Pariyar
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
"The mind is an innocent fellow and doesn't know the cruel world".
This song mixes dhol beats with rock beats. Surprisingly it blends in well. The song has a sad or negative feel to it which would I assume be a perfect song just before the  climax. The rock interlude sounds a bit misplaced in the scene of things but overall it's just fine.

Like I said before, my goal for this review was to write it as an independent movie album and not as a sequel. When you start comparing, you lose out on the real enjoyment of music. Isolating this album from its prequel really helped me enjoy the songs more compared to other people I've seen on internet who are whining about how Rock On! music was better. This is definitely a must-listen album. So here are my favourites from the album:
Jaago
Udja Re
Manzar Naya
Woh Jahaan
Hoi Kiw/Chalo Chalo

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
