Music Review | Teraa Surroor | Himesh Reshammiya

Until 2013, Himesh had been singing all the songs in the films where he played the lead role. Which by the number of albums is very few, but the number of songs that he would accommodate in these albums was huge (Yes, pointing towards Aap Kaa Surroor, Karzzzz and Radio with 9 songs each). With Xpose, he let go off a few songs to Mohammad Irfan Ali and Ankit Tiwari but maintained his trademark with number of songs in that album (18 to be precise including a Mashup).

Fast forward to 2016, Himesh Reshammiya is back with what sounds like a sequel to Aap Ka Surroor but doesn't look so. In fact, if you take it in literal sense Himesh refused to give any respect to her surroor this time - from Aap Ka to Teraa. The number of songs too have surprisingly reduced to 7.

Before starting let me make a confession - Father I have sinned, I am a Himesh Reshammiya fan.
My review below though, will be unbiased by this fact and will be biased towards good music. *fingers crossed*

Main Woh Chaand
Singer: Darshan Raval (No, it's not Arijit Singh)
Lyrics: Sameer
Genre: Melody with lyrics you couldn't care less about

Two things that immediately caught my attention listening to the song first time itself - the way he starts Ashqon mein hai yaadien teri, Bheegi bheegi raatein meri, gum hain kahin rahein meri with a deep voice and the violin+cello loop after the chorus. It's a post breakup depression song with a perennial chaand used as a reference.

Bekhudi
Singers: Darshan Raval, Aditi Singh Sharma
Lyrics: Sameer
Genre: Prequel to Breakup Song.

Man, this guy can imitate Himesh too. Probably he had to in this song, since Himesh is lip syncing in the video. Those high pitch bekhudis by Darshan is amazing. However, female portions of the song are a bit disappointing. It seems as if Aditi is trying too hard to match with Darshan's bekhudi note but is unable to reach there. The only part of the song where my ears hurt was the word beliya. Amidst a lot of urdu words in the song, they chose beliya - could have easily chosen saathiya. The last time I heard beliya in a song was Bol Beliya from Kill Dil (and that was a disastrous movie with forgettable songs - except Sweeta by Adnan Sami).

Wafa Ne Bewafai
Singers: Arijit Singh, Neeti Mohan, Suzanne D'Mello
Lyrics: Sameer
Genre: Euphemism - Harsh fact of an unfaithful partner expressed in an Arijit soulful way

Any song sung by Himesh sounds sad, depressive even if it's a romantic track. Completely opposite to this, any song sung by Arijit is romantic even if the song is dedicated to that bewafa partner you are trying to hate. You cannot hate Arijit's voice, how can anyone? Well, there's another singer in the song that I think stole it away from him this time - Neeti Mohan. This song deserved a separate male and female versions. My personal favourite of this album so far. And yeah, there's an english part in the song sung by Suzanne which I think is just used to show-off the singing skills of the lead actress in the video.

Teri Yaad
Singers: Himesh Reshammiya, Badshah
Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed
Genre: Hookah Bar styled 'Not Yo Yo Honey Singh' rapped Party song

Wohoo..!!Finally... The chartbuster/party-number of the album. This one is an instant hit in the clubs. Love it, hate it but you won't be able to ignore it.
Side note: I understand one does not listen to the entire length of a party song like this but couldn't help but notice that it ends abruptly.

Adhuri Zindagi
Singer: Rituraj Mohanty
Lyrics: Sameer
Genre: Dhamki styled proposal song

So this is sounds like it'll be used for climax sequences. It also reminds me of Milne Hain Mujhse Aayi from Ashiqui 2. After this song I am kind of getting the sequence of events in the love story. This song will be the dark horse of the entire album. Hits all the right notes throughout the duration. However, I was eagerly expecting an epic ending with jugalbandi between guitar and drums. Did not happen! :-(

Ishq Samundar (Reloaded)
Singer: Himesh Reshammiya, Kanika Kapoor
Lyrics: Anand Raj Anand
Genre: 6 Kaante guys combined into one Himesh remake song

So this is where the Assalam Wallekum in the trailer was hiding in. This song needs no review. It's been 14 years since the original version came out. This is a refreshed version of it. I like this version too. Whether you like it or not totally depends on two parts of lyrics:
1. Assalam Wallekum
2. Take it off baby. Take it off (Apparently ishq is samundar so let's get into bikini)

Teri Yaad (Reprise)
Singer: Himesh Reshammiya
Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed
Genre: Hangover version of the Teri Yaad party song

This could have easily been part of MTV Unplugged. It is amazing to see how the song suddenly changes its mood once you take out Badshah from the equation and reduce the tempo to half. The song ends by reminding us the iconic Oooooooo (from Aashiq Banaya Aapne).

It is not always that you like all songs in an album but Himesh has managed to do this, once again. Nobody cares how the movie would be, it will be these songs that people would be listen on repeat for a few months at least until it gets dumped at the bottom of their playlist by new songs.

TOP 3 PICKS:
1. Wafa Ne Bewafai
2. Adhuri Zindagi
3. Main Woh Chaand

Consolation: Teri Yaad (the party version)

That is all I have for this album. I hope you liked this review. If you do then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album or if you have any suggestions/feedback - in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
