Music Review | Ok Jaanu | A. R. Rahman

The movie as well as the music album is a remake of Tamil movie 'O Kadhal Kanmani' (Oh Love, Apple of my Eye).

To be honest, I did not anticipate this album to be so popular even though A. R. Rahman has composed it (remember Lekar Hum Deewana Dil). Maybe 'The Humma Song' partly ruined that anticipation. However, all this doesn't matter. When it's A. R. Rahman you are bound to get an amazing music album. So without further ado, let's get right into it!

Album Release Date: 4th January 2017

Ok Jaanu Title Track
Singer: Srinidhi Venkatesh, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
'Ok Jaanu' the name sounds so sweet that you'd expect a Saathiya type title track. But you are welcomed with a fast paced peppy duet between A. R. Rahman and his sound engineer turned playback singer Srinidhi. The songs talks about - 'Ok Dear, take a chill pill!'.

Singer: Arijit Singh, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
As soon as Arijit Singh starts singing you realize it's Kina Sona Tenu (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) but no, it's just one line 'Enna sona kyun Rabb ne banaya'. This is a different take to that song after it was tried in Raja Hindustani. It's a nice unplugged song but not one of his bests. Arijit Singh singing in Punjabi is a little awkward.

Singer: Savithri R Prithvi, Arjun Chandy, Neeti Mohan, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
The entire song is in slow chorus. It would have caught my attention if there was at least one lead singer to it.

Singer: Paroma Das Gupta, Shashaa Tirupati, Hard Kaur, ADK, Kaly, A.R. Rahman, Ashima Mahajan
Lyrics: Gulzar
The song starts with a lively and feel good mood. This song can be divided into three parts - the English rap, chorus and other random bits. There is a huge disconnect between the feel of the chorus and the rest of the song. I can play the chorus on loop for hours, cannot say the same for rest of the song.

Singer: Jonita Gandhi, Nakash Aziz, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
This song finally stamps Jonita Gandhi's presence in Bollywood. Why do I say this? A lot of singers can playback commercial peppy numbers. In order to sustain in the long run your basics must be clear i.e. Indian classical music. That is what this song is. In terms of lyrics, there is only one verse repeated throughout the runtime.

Singer: A.R. Ameen, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
This song originates from Qasīdat al-Burda, meaning Poem of the Mantle in Arabic. Qasīdat al-Burda is an ode of praise for the Islamic prophet Muhammad composed by the eminent Sufi, Imam al-Busiri of Egypt. You would have done the same thing I did after seeing the name 'A. R. Ameen' - look up if he is the son of A. R. Rahman. Yes, he is. I didn't understand majority of the lyrics but A. R. Ameen's voice is as soulful as his father and has the same innocence.

Singer: Shashaa Tirupati, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
Yes, please listen to this song in repeat mode. Such beautiful and soothing classical music can be found in just a few albums these days. This is one of those albums. The tanpura in the background itself makes it soothing. I always enjoy a good classical Indian music in a movie if it's done right.

Singer: Tanishk Bagchi, Jubin Nautiyal, Shashaa Tirupati, Badshah, A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Mehboob
And the most anticipated song of the album! Let me make it clear first. I am a huge fan of the original song. Nothing can replace or beat that one. Now I do understand the sensuous mood of this song. Things are going in the right direction until Badshah begins his rap portions. I am tired of telling this again and again - not every song needs a rap to be popular. It just ruined the entire song for me. Period!

When it's A. R. Rahman you never question the quality of the music even when it is a remake of his south Indian music albums ( remember Bombay and Roja?). However, I have mixed feelings for this album unfortunately. It doesn't happen too often with A. R. Rahman but this album got lost in the attempt to make it commercially successful. Otherwise Mr. Rahman doesn't ever need to reuse his own song in his album or even use Punjabi rapper for the heck of it. Nonetheless here are my favourites from the album:
Ok Jaanu Title Track
Saajan Aayo Re
Maula Wa Salim
Sunn Bhavara
The Humma Song (Rahman sir can be excused once for the wrong use of rap even though I am a nobody to do that)

That is all I have for this album. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!
